John  Conway

(영국 수학자 1937~)

John Horton Conway 는 theory of finite groups, knot theory, number theory, combinatorial game theory, coding theory 분야에서 왕성한 활동을 하는 수학자이다.

그는 combinatorial game theory 로 널리 알려져 있으며 game of life 를 발명하였다. 또한 philosopher's football 뿐만아니라 sprouts 발명자중 일인이며 Soma cube 와 같은 많은 게임과 퍼즐을 상세히 분석하고 개발하였다. 그는 미해결 문제인 Angel problem 을 다루기도 하였다.

그는 숫자의 새로운 시스템인 초현실적인 숫자들 (surreal numbers) 를 발명하였는데, 그것은 어떤 게임과도 밀접하게 관련된 것으로서 Donald Knuth 의 수학소설 (mathematical novel) 의 주제였었다. 또한 대단히 큰수 (large number) 를 위한 명명법인 Conway chained arrow notation 을 발명했다.

Michael Guy 와 함께 1960 년대 중반에 64 convex nonprismatic uniform polychora 를 설립했다. 또한 classification of finite simple groups 에 대한 작업을 하였고 Conway groups 를 발견했다. 일주일의 날짜를 계산하기위한 Doomsday algorithm 을 발명했다.

Conway 는 현재 Princeton 대학의 수학교수이며 Cambridge 대학에서 공부했다. 1981 년에는 Royal Society 의 펠로우로 선출되었다.

그의 저서는 Atlas of Finite Groups, The Sensual (Quadratic) Form, On Numbers and Games, Winning Ways for your Mathematical Plays, The Book of Numbers 를 비롯하여 몇권의 책이 있다. ............. (Wikipedia : John Conway)
